Prolongation of US sanctions against Russia

On 27 February 2025 President Trump signed an executive order extending a number of previous acts governing anti-Russian sanctions. Initially, they were enacted following the events of 2014 and included a ban on investment in Crimea, but were later extended in 2018 and on 21 February 2022. They prohibit any investment, import or export of goods (including through third countries) and the provision of any services to entities that are registered or associated with the disputed territories. These decrees also impose restrictions on certain natural and legal persons (SDN sanctions).

These acts were extended for another year, until February 2026.

However, there is a second list of presidential decrees that govern US sanctions policy. These executive orders were introduced in 2021 and extended in 2022 and 2023, when more serious sanctions were imposed on the Russian Federation. It was these orders that banned the import of Russian energy resources into the United States and imposed sanctions on Russian companies in the energy and banking sectors. It was also these decrees that put an end to all US investment in the Russian economy and prohibited the export and re-export of all goods and services to Russia.

These executive orders were last extended in April 2024 and were not extended by Trump as part of the executive order of 27 February 2025. They are due to expire on 15 April 2025, but can be renewed at any time.
